Compositions include original full-length musical theatre pieces written in collaboration with various writers, as well as incidental music and songs for theatre and film/video ranging from Shakespeare and cutting-edge drama/arthouse video to theatre-in-education and commercial pantomime. I work closely with directors and the creative team, drawing upon my wide tastes in musical style to produce truly 'bespoke' music, with myself as multi-instrumentalist and/or in addition to employing the very best musicians.

RESEARCH / INTERESTS

* The history and influence of Tango: Pilot video documentary funded by East Midlands Arts, produced using footage shot in Seinajoki, Finland. Ongoing research and composition tracing roots in Argentina and into Europe envisaged, leading to TV documentary/book.

* Indian Classical Music: Studies in tabla, voice and notation in Varanasi (Benares style).

* Bengali popular theatre: research carried out in Calcutta, particularly into Jatra Theatre and the influence of Rabindranath Tagore

* Music-drama and ritual from a world-wide perspective, particularly the Far East and Africa, and especially focusing on vocal techniques.

* 20th Century Western Music Theatre from Expressionism to American musical comedy, with particular interest in the work of Robert Wilson, Meredith Monk, Stephen Sondheim, Brecht, Meyerhold etc. etc..
